#NowIKnow: My screening results empowered me to make lasting lifestyle changes
Written by Lina Noh, Administrative Assistant, Quest Diagnostics
I was introduced to the Blueprint for Wellness® screening program through my husband’s employer in 2016, even before I started working for Quest Diagnostics. During that time, I was at my peak weight and was feeling unmotivated even though I knew I was in the worst shape of my life. I avoided mirrors, scales, and doctors! The program incentives urged us to participate, and only then did I see the staggering numbers and the uncomfortable reality.
My first results booklet has my weight listed at 207 lbs with a BMI of 38.4, and my triglycerides and glucose levels were way above the normal range. My overall Health Quotient score (a score assigned to the participant based on health questionnaire data and screening results) was a 58/100. I was avoiding the problem and telling myself that everything was fine, but seeing the actual numbers triggered a red flag that led me to see a doctor.
I found out I had symptoms of prediabetes, and the doctor told me it would soon develop into type 2 diabetes if I did not start changing my habits and losing weight. This really scared me as I have seen diabetes eat away at my grandmother’s joints, leading to the amputation of both her legs.
Empowered to make change
I gradually changed my lifestyle by cutting out junk foods and exercising multiple days a week. Soon I began to look forward to the next Blueprint for Wellness screening as I saw and felt positive changes in my body and mind. My 2017 results showed my weight at 165 lbs with a BMI of 30, as well as normal triglyceride and glucose levels, and Health Quotient score of 80/100!
Within a year, I was able to reverse my prediabetes symptoms, all thanks to the initial shocking push from my Blueprint for Wellness results.
I started working at Quest Diagnostics in early 2018. My 2018 screening results showed that I was keeping my weight off and was very healthy overall. I am now in the 130-pound range with a normal BMI, and I cannot wait to participate in the 2019 Blueprint for Wellness screening. I sometimes look back at my 2016 results to remind myself of how far I’ve come and to motivate myself to keep up the good work. It has been a long journey, but I firmly believe that my first steps were taken thanks to Blueprint for Wellness.
